Swapping our house in Yorkshire for a B&B in SW France?

Is it a ridiculous idea to offer to swap our five bedroom house in West Yorkshire for a suitable property of similar value in south west France?
I don't mean for a week's holiday but permanently? Is it even possible or does property law require that a 'sale' takes place?
I imagine the chances of finding a suitable property in a location we like and owned by people who want our house are very small; which is why we have a property market?
