thanks to all who have posted on this one, it has really helped me to fathom what the problem is and what to do about it, which as John and various others have pointed me towards, is to increase the power rating. I had the wrong end of the stick at the start of the thread and thought the bill increased in proportion with the power rating (ie, you mulitplied the consumption by some figure to do with the power rating) but from all the information here I have realised that the power rating just affects the standing charge, which isn't used as a multiplier on the consumption to get your final bill - and as John says, it is worth it to get rid of the aggro of the popping circuits. So that's what we are going to do!

Now only got to decide how much to reimburse the lady who ate out at my expense!
