My mam used an old fashioned mop as kind of a plunger down the loo, it created a vacuum and often got rid of small obstructions.

Our last B&B on our Shetland trip the bed runner was basically at a stretch moderately decorative but mainly a trip hazzard when it fell off after about 10 minutes and we got up for the loo during the night.
