We price in euros - always have - but Transferwise has made the payment process just so much easier for UK guests. Think I was one of the very first to use it and have seen it come on in leaps and bounds. I create a direct link for each guest to pay - they click on it, do a quick registration if the...

I don't have anything to add to this rather bizarre discussion other than to say to you, vfmfca, that I'm sorry you've had a rough ride so early on in your Lay My Hat 'career'.

We're mostly rather helpful and constructive, so please don't be put off

Great minds again, zebedee - I drew the template today and there's no way the key will fit

And yes, that's my big problem with Master Lock. Though really, I don't think anyone's likely to bother in a village lane like this. Previous owner used to leave the key under a stone!

Another vote for Google maps - I have several, for directions from various places, markets, food shops etc etc. They're not on my public website, but guests get access to them from my arrival pack, which is actually a password protected website - and they're used (and downloaded) a lot.

We have Dragon - wear very well, and you can buy sets plus individual extras (at least we can in France). I'd recommend it.

Yes, I'd thought of that too (great minds and all that  ) but decided it wouldn't be secure enough. I have now found a Masterlock key safe that will take the key diagonally so will probably go for that. It's not quite as secure as the C500 but I don't think it'll be a huge problem. And I'll pla...

Ha ha!

No, I want a key safe to help with late arrivals, for any guests who aren't coming on from our Ariège house. And I definitely don't want a modern lock - it's an old cottage, and the lock and door are part of its charm ...

Hmmm - interesting idea ... though it's a stone wall! So probably not possible, sadly. Thanks for the thought though.

Key safe conundrum

I want to buy a key safe for our new cottage (it will be fixed to the wall in the porch) but I'm really struggling to find one that will take the key, which is 11cm long. I was hoping to buy the Supra C500 that I know a lot of people on here have, but although it's one of the biggest, it still won't...

She's not French, is she? It's absolutely the norm here to provide a cheque as a security deposit which is never cashed (unless there's damage) - it's simply held then returned on or after departure. But I don't read this guest as wanting to provide an uncashed cheque - just asking whether she can p...

I too would run a hundred miles from 'damp experts' who basically haven't a clue (or any interest) in how a period property works. (Nor have most surveyors or estate agents, come to that). This forum is a good starting point - it's one we used a lot when we owned a listed building in north Norfolk b...

Marks, the date box goes away but you can't click on the property to see the listing - every time you click on it the date box just comes up again. So you can get the list of properties, yes, but can't view the listing.

It's beyond comment, even for OD

Vivaweek is a decent looking site, Andrew - but I think I'd want some concrete evidence that it works before parting with 139€.

New listing site

Don't know if anyone else has had the same email as me but there's a new start up for French rentals, French Stays Direct. Site is not very well designed, a bit amateurish and there are few properties so far. Seems to work like a slightly extended version of Gitelink, with no availability calendar, ...
