Gites connected to main house

Hi. We're considering buying a property and turning part of it into a gite. From your experience does having a gite that is connected to the owner's property put visitors off? In this case a couple of the bedrooms would be over our kitchen & living room. We're wondering if we might be better buy...

Best tax regime for running a B&B business

Just reading about the differences between the micro-entrepreneur tax status and régime réel and wondered what option B&B owners had decided upon? I'm aware that there are turnover limits on micro-entrepreneur status which would exclude B&B businesses turning over more than €170,000 but wond...

B&Bs South West France open in January

La Reine and I will be visiting South West France in January and, after a couple of days cat sitting in Saint-Jean-de Luz, we'll be meandering our way back towards Limoges between 27th and 31st. We'd welcome any suggestions of where to visit and suggestions for B&B accommodation open at that tim...

Thanks Pendragon. I think having land will be a secondary consideration to finding the right house. However, we'd like enough to have a decent garden to sit in, to accommodate a swimming pool and a play area for children close enough to the house to be safe but far enough away so that visitors who w...

The best advice I can give you is to choose your location very carefully. France can be a very lonely place in winter, the French are very family orientated so it doesn't matter how well you know your neighbours or get on with them they will be tied up with their family a lot of the time. I am also...

After reading all those books I would love to know their and your over all opinion ?? Thanks for the suggestions. If I had to sum up what I've gleaned from my reading to date I would say... the more you put in the better life becomes; get to know and embrace your neighbours; budget properly for any...

Thanks Moliere. I hadn't come across "More France Please" and will look out for Graham Robb's book. The J J Norwich book was OK but I found myself getting my French kings and emperors muddled up.

Books about moving to and living in France

In the last couple of months I've read quite a few (>25) personal accounts by people who have moved to France... you can't do too much research! However I'm rapidly running out and am looking for suggestions. If you have a favourite, or have written your own account and published it, please point me...

Sadly, I think people think that gites, self-catering is going to be easy money and a way to make money from a property. Disillusionment awaits! Anyone who has done any research will find plenty of people who will tell them how hard it is. However, that doesn't necessarily mean they, or we, shouldn...
