Thank you SusanMay. I am glad it's not just me. It turns out the mattresses I got for the Cottage were from Hotel Contract Beds, so they are different. I can't actually say anything else about the situation, I am so cross with myself. If anyone in the Highlands wants a Kingsize or a Double Hotel Cos...

I've also discovered they're cheaper if you don't buy direct.

Mattissons Hotel Cosmopolitan Mattress: harder than before?

Hello everyone We got Mattisons Hotel Cosmopolitan mattresses for our zip link beds a couple of years ago based on recommendations here and have been very happy with them. When our guests comment on the beds they say how comfortable they are. I've not slept on them, but they certainly seem quite bou...

That's really helpful, thank you Caroline. The changeover fee I charge my guests is £90 and now I've got a year's bookings I can double check it covers all the changeover costs. I am thinking of asking my neighbour to pay me the full changeover fee for each of her bookings, then charging a percentag...

Managing my neighbour's property - what to charge?

Hi I am not sure if this is in the best forum - I am sorry if it isn't. We have a niche property in a place so remote that there are no full service management companies nearby. I market it myself (PR, social media, advertising on commission-based sites and listings sites, etc), and I have an local ...

Laundering the linen from unused beds

Hello We sleep six, but I strongly suspect we'll get a lot of bookings for fewer than six people. We'll make up all the beds for every booking, but should we wash all the linen? Do you ask guests to indicate which beds they've used in some way? Eg rolling the duvet back, stripping the bed, etc? (My ...

For linen, I am probably going to go fair trade / organic with https://foufurnishings.com - You can ask for a price list and Stephanie is lovely and very helpful and has sent me samples which has helped a lot. We are still dithering about the towels. We can't afford to be as green as we'd like (I do...

Thanks everyone for your help. I went into John Lewis and explained my question to two of the lovely ladies in their kitchenware department, and they just shook their heads and said there wasn't a right answer. So I said - "What would YOU choose in my situation? I know I'll have to replace them...

Out of the frying pan.....

What sort of frying pans to get? I bought a cast iron egg pan for myself as a student 35 years ago and a set of three cast iron pans from Woolworths 19 years ago, and all four are still going strong. But I know how to look after them...... This week I was staying away and used a brand new (cheap) no...

I am still pulling together a spreadsheet of potential bedding, so I'll add these suggestions to it.

Thank you all for your help.

Pillows and pillow protectors

Hello all We are just setting up in Caithness and I am at the stage of buying bedding for a cottage that sleeps six. I am stunned by the quantity (and price!) of bedding, and have a couple of questions. Pillow protectors are more expensive than pillows. Are they worth it? Also - what about duvet pro...
